My name is Edee Lemonier, and I am a professional proofreader. I love my job. I am a word nerd, and I have always had an obsession with spelling and grammar. I love reading people’s work and searching for those little nits that try and slip through. For me, it’s like a treasure hunt. I love making you, my client, look good.
How It All Started
I taught second grade, and later fourth grade. As you might imagine, spelling, grammar, and punctuation are all heavily emphasized during these years. As teachers, we have to understand the reasons behind the rules. One day a student announced out of the blue, “My grandpa’s a writer!” As it turned out, he is a national best-selling science fiction author with a book series that has been translated into several languages and is popular not only in the United States, but in several other countries. I read the first of his books over the summer. I was hooked. When school started again, we had a discussion about the series in the school parking lot. He asked if I was any good at proofreading. A week later he showed up after school with a manuscript in a cardboard box. That was nearly ten years ago. I’ve been proofreading for him ever since.
Writer to Writer
Proofreader is what I do. Writer is who I am. A number of my personal essays, short stories, and poems have been published over the last few years. As a writer, I understand how difficult it is to trust someone else with your work. I will treat your manuscript with the same care and respect I want for my own work.
Think about a time you went for a casual walk in your neighborhood. There were trees rustling in a light breeze. The smell of barbecue drifted over from someone’s backyard. It was a good day. Maybe tomorrow will be more productive. Bang! Your toe caught on an uneven piece of sidewalk, maybe an overgrown tree root. You’re snapped back to reality. That is what proofreading is like for me. Each mistake is like that uneven concrete or the tree root that snaps me out of what I’m reading. As a result, I am methodical and detail-oriented in my proofreading.
